On Thursday, a study in the Nature journal Scientific Reports proposed a solution: the pendulums transfer energy to one another through sound pulses. A pair of Portuguese scientists hypothesised that these pulses might move from clock to clock, perturbing the swing of the pendulums and eventually causing them to synchronise. They developed a complex mathematical model before conducting experiments with a pair of clocks attached to a rail fixed to a wall. Narrower Lasers Could Yield Better Atomic Clocks COPENHAGEN, Denmark, March 10, 2015 — Atomic clocks lose 1 second every 300 million years, but that level of accuracy isn’t good enough for researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute. For even better precision, they’ve devised a new way to narrow the linewidth of the red lasers that excite the electrons that function as their clock’s pendulum. Typical resonators used to stabilize lasers still produce some noise because of the vibrations of the atoms that make up their mirrors. Instead of trying to further stabilize the mirrors, the researchers decided to put a new medium between the mirrors. The approach could lead to sub-100-mHz laser stabilization, as well as superradiant laser sources, the researchers said. Strangely though, it is not Antonio – the merchant, who is the cause of most of the happenings in the play – that you think of. Certainly in the recent Globe’s production, the memorable character is Shylock, partly because he was played by... However the decision to play his friendship with Bassanio as a gay love affair feels forced out of the text and confusing at times, both for the audience and the characters. Once Bassanio marries Portia, before the end of the first act, you end up with a very bizarre love triangle, meaning that the play feels unfinished and unresolved. The past few productions in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre have been very literal and naturalistic (the Loman house in Death of a Salesman. the recreation of Charlecote Park for the Love’s Labour’s Plays etc) but this production goes in a very different direction. Having the floor and a wall under the proscenium as a giant mirror opens up the theatre and the stage feels very exposed. Presumably it is a pendulum, but is it for Antonio’s time ticking away to pay Shylock. Or is it for Portia’s time ticking away to find a husband (she is after all the one who sets it off).
