From back garden vegetable patches and allotments with decades-long waiting lists to urban rooftop "farms" and vertical kitchen gardens, the grow-your-own revolution is in full swing. Anyone who has tilled the soil will appreciate the diligence and ingenuity of the head gardeners of yore who turned walled gardens into well-oiled food factories, inventing self-sufficiency before the term was even coined. Now, a growing band of brave souls are tapping into the desire to reconnect with the land on a grand scale and breathing new life into long-abandoned walled gardens around Britain. When she stepped into the walled garden of Newport House in Almeley, Herefordshire, for the first time it was completely overgrown. "Nothing had been done to the house since the Second World War, when it became a home for Latvian refugees," says Crichton Watt, who moved into the Georgian house in 2004 with her husband David and their four children. The couple bought the two-and-a-half-acre walled garden from the council in 2008 and set about extensively refurbishing it based on Victorian garden designs. All is grown organically and tended by three full-time gardeners, along with the more usual fruit, vegetable and flower varieties in the outdoor beds. This October, an outdoor sculpture show entitled Out of Nature will be held in the grounds.
Outside it's a sun-drenched summer afternoon but inside the Sports Page Lounge & Deli it's difficult to tell if it's day or night right now. We're sitting in red vinyl chairs that may date back to the era when headband-sporting Canadian rockers Loverboy ruled the charts. A drum-cymbal hung on a nearby wall counts as interior design. Such is the Sports Page's is cozy, funky charm. The Page, as it's known to its faithful customers, is mostly known for these pleasingly dive-y aesthetics and hosting local live music, including frequent sets by classic-rockers 5ive O'clock Charlie, whose bearded frontman Mike Roberts co-owns... What's less-known is The Page serves up surprisingly solid bar food. ) On a recent Friday around noon, our dining party of three started out with two appetizers: wings ($5. 95 for six, also available: $8. 25 for 10, $16. 50 for 24) and onion rings ($2. 75). We passed the time waiting for our apps by feeding a few... Our juke selections included Joan Jett, The Doors, John Lee Hooker and Steve Miller Band. The accompanying ranch dressing was, well, ranch dressing. The onion rings were little on the greasy side, but the batter was delicate and crispy and didn't fall apart when you bit into a ring.
Susan Kangal's youngest daughter, Alli, 13, slept with her mother Saturday night. "We are home, warm, dry and safe now," Susan wrote on her Facebook page. Alli had been aboard her father's 34-foot S2 sailboat "Bora," with her mom Susan, a sailor with some 45 years of experience, at the helm, for the 57 annual regatta. Susan has participated in the race for "probably 25 years or more," she said. Susan's all-female crew of eight included both of her daughters, Alli and her older sister Kamran, 15. her co-captain, Angie Dixon, and her daughters Suzie, 14, and Allie, 16. and Karen Esbensen and her daughter Emily, 17. They set out from Mobile... After the race was postponed by an hour, they started at 10:45. "We were out for a good time," said Susan, who had posted a photo of her crew of three women and five teenagers earlier that morning on her Facebook page. " she'd written at 8:12 a. m. The group's theme was "Gettin' Jiggy With It," and they all wore matching hats and plastic leis, and drank from pineapple-shaped cups. "We were all happy," Susan said. And it was, until about 2 o'clock. Susan, who describes herself as a "fair-weather sailor," had been paying attention to the weather forecast, which on Friday night "looked better," she said.
