One of the great things about making friends in the collector and watchmaking communities is that sooner or later, one starts receiving invitations to visit the places where the creative thinking and beautiful handwork in horology actually... I’ve now had the opportunity to take part in many such visits and I can tell you with some confidence that there is nothing quite like visiting with Vianney Halter at his workshop in the small Swiss town of Sainte-Croix. People who have visited Vianney sometimes describe the workshop as a “mad scientist’s lab,” and you can see why when you are shown manufacturing tools like the homemade, automated milling machine (below). And it must work as it is the source of a very large number of the bridges and springs used in the Vianney Halter watches. Since Halter’s watches are produced in such small numbers and many of them (like the Antiqua with its instantaneously jumping perpetual calendar complication) are quite complex, it stands to reason that over the life of the production runs, he...
The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 marked the beginning of a new era for A. Lange & Söhne. On 3 November 2014, the company is commemorating this historic connection with a temporary art event at the Berlin East Side Gallery in celebration of the 25th anniversary. Street artist Jakub Hortig used spray paint to create a large picture of the Lange 1, which has long since become a symbol of the brand's comeback and the return of the Saxon watch industry. The skilled goldsmith and jeweller has been working as a finisseur for A. Lange & Söhne since 2007. His street art themes include words painted with a brush and designs that make use of stencils. The East Side Gallery on Mühlenstraße in Berlin-Friedrichshain is arguably the best-known – and at a length of 1. 3 km also one of the largest – open-air galleries in the world. In spring 1990, 118 artists from 21 countries had already begun to paint this stretch of the wall.
The dining room is the only room in the house with only one clock and the others have three or more. At the entrance to their living room sits a grandfather clock that once belonged to the late Slinky company co-founder and former owner Betty James. "Many of them chime and play music, and they all go off at the same time," Betty said. "He has many hobbies, but this is one of his specialties and he really enjoys refurbishing clocks. I don't want him to sit around and be bored, and he will never be bored. Glenn, 63, who retired as a letter carrier for the Altoona post office, and Betty, 61, a retired beauty shop owner, have two grown children, Eric of Mechanicsburg, and Karen Price of McDonald, and four grandchildren. The former engineer, who sometimes replaces expensive hard-to-find parts with digital mechanisms, got started repairing clocks when he was a kid, he said. "When I was a kid, we didn't have a whole lot of money, and a lot of times, we'd be given clocks that came in from family members that needed repaired, and I would just repair them. Glenn enjoys the challenge, he said. "I like the fact that it's a challenge because there aren't too many people who can do it. I love it when someone hands me something and says, 'We took it to a professional, and he couldn't get it running and it.
