A couple of years ago at C2E2, during the second edition of the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, I bought a small terra cotta pot from an older man seated at a table. He never looked at me. he worked for the duration of our transaction, sculpting felted wool into small "Star Wars" figurines. His wife took the money, and he nodded and continued churning and churning his wool into miniature cylindrical Chewbaccas and R2-D2s that he then placed into seedling pots, as though planting pop culture cactuses. If you ever come over to my home, his work is on a table in the main foyer, surrounded by a forest of framed photographs of grandparents, grinning family members, pets, vacations and the children of college friends. There's a crack in the terra cotta now, the result of a family cat (apparently, more of a "Star Trek" fan). Something to consider if you went to C2E2 this year, or go to San Diego's seminal Comic-Con International in July, or Chicago's Wizard World in August: Amid the cult actors and comic book artists, the cosplay and Kevin Smith, there are smart... "The truth is, C2E2 is 50 percent pop culture panels and 50 percent buying stuff," said Stephen Fodor, an Algonquin, Ill. But sometimes acquiring stuff is easier. Another of my favorite C2E2 acquisitions were panels of old "Spider-Man" comics where everything was removed but the word balloons, rendering the images disassociated, melancholy.
I started with the title before getting to the actual art work in the gallery because it seems to be as much a part of the exhibition as the works themselves. I realized in writing this that reading and saying How Do I Fit This Ghost in My Mouth. starts the exhibition for me before I get anywhere near the gallery. What I saw at the VAG wasn’t one ghost but many. There are ghosts of the building’s past and ghosts of Farmer’s past. There are ghosts of photography and ghosts of history. There are ghosts to look at and ghosts to listen to. It’s an exhibition haunted by ghosts. Farmer is one of the newer, younger generation of local artists who have put Vancouver on the contemporary international art map. This year’s exhibition by a Vancouver artist marks the second summer in a row that the VAG has focused on local talent. Farmer talked about art, photography and growing up gay which is here. If you don’t buy the idea that the exhibition starts with the title, it’s still a little difficult to say precisely where the show begins. They’re inside in the lobby in two vitrines on the old parts of the annex by the main entrance on Hornby: on one side is a wooden owl and on the other, a ceramic ET with the hand-written, marked down price tag.
As well as inventing philosophy, the Olympics and democratic government, the Ancient Greeks left us the legacy of architectural design. The Romans, meanwhile, gave us newspapers, a love of Latin and straight roads – and don't even get us started on design. And despite our love of modern minimalism, we still keep looking to the epic inventions of these ancient civilisations. But then there's something so classy about Roman numerals, chalky white pillars and cheeky cherubs that when used cleverly undoubtedly complement a modern interior. Ditto everything Ancient Greek. Here are just a few of the ways you can tap into the trend for all things Roman and Greek. Work the ancient with the modern. We particularly like the wonderfully witty Hercules XIII universal tablet stand , £120, by Scott Eaton – a thoroughly modern nod to the ancient world. This sturdy but stylish Milano table, £2,089, by Morten Georgsen for BoConcept, is fit for an emperor. Mount it on a plinth for a moody Roman vibe. We're loving the Roman lite vibe here.
