It’s rare to get a retail history lesson from a cable drama, but when the D. C. -based “House of Cards” set a scene in Las Vegas, the camera panned across a remnant of a bygone Minneapolis retail chain: a Gambles store, complete with original logo. Chains like Pure, Tydol, Esso, Phillips 66, or Texaco. But the buildings they left weren’t like empty shops in a strip mall, or even an abandoned big-box store marooned in a parking lot. Gas stations look like nothing else, and no matter what you do to them, they look like gas stations. Provided, that is, you know what gas stations used to look like. Today’s high-schoolers grew up with the Holiday-SuperAmerica model: broad metal roofs over two islands with three or four pumps. Today’s gas station is a grocery store that sells gas. At old gas stations, the offerings were scant. You went to the gas station because your car needed something. There was nothing romantic about the early gas stations. Pure Oil refined the form into little peak-roofed cottages that wouldn’t be out of place in a Maxfield Parrish painting.
Second-year coach Derek Mason is decked out in head-to-toe black attire, save for neon green Nike sneakers, and barks out orders to his defense. The team’s first on-field workout came on Feb. Vanderbilt’s players say the early start, both on the clock and on the calendar, is no accident. Mason led the Commodores to a dismal 3-9 mark in his first year at the helm, including a 0-8 record in the SEC. The team lost seven league contests by double digits and failed to pick up a conference win for the first time since ’09. Mason started three different quarterbacks over the first three games, and four total on the year. The final product was one of the worst in college football: The program ranked 119 in scoring defense. Fans worried that Mason’s debut marked a return to Vandy’s role as a perennial SEC bottom-feeder. After the program recorded just one winning season from 1982 to 2010, Mason’s predecessor, James Franklin, did a remarkable job of revitalizing the Commodores: He won 24 games in his three years in Nashville and posted consecutive nine-win... Mason inherited a roster accustomed to winning, but says the learning curve was steeper than he expected.
NEW YORK – In the new, high-octane production of "Grounded" written by Northeast Ohio playwright George Brant that opens at The Public Theater Sunday, Anne Hathaway stars as a hotshot flier of F-16s, downed by an unexpected pregnancy. After years of serving as wife and mommy, the woman known only as "The Pilot" yearns to get back into the air – rain Sidewinders and Mavericks down on minarets, breaking down "the structures that break up the sand. Relegated to the "Chair Force," a windowless trailer in the Nevada desert, she drives "to war like it's shift work" and operates remotely piloted aircraft, killing machines that roam the sky 8,000 miles away. Plays that offer something more are harder to come by. Blessed with good timing, they have a prescient quality that makes them feel not just current but vital, forcing us to confront uncomfortable issues we'd rather keep buried. Brant's "Grounded" is such a work – seemingly fashioned out of the very air of our anxious, post-9/11 world. That timeliness, and Brant's take-no-prisoners protagonist, drew the Hollywood A-lister and Broadway legend Julie Taymor ("The Lion King"), who directs the show, to his white-knuckle, one-person play.
