How researchers listen for gravitational waves - Phys.Org

A century ago, Albert Einstein postulated the existence of gravitational waves in his General Theory of Relativity. At the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hanover, researchers are on the trail of this phenomenon with the GEO600 detector. Isaac Newton strolled not through paradise, but through an English park. He nevertheless had a run-in with an apple - or to be more precise: it hit Newton on the head. There is some doubt as to whether there is any truth in the story of the falling apple. In any case, the encounter with the apple proved fruitful for Newton. It is said to have made him think that one and the same physical phenomenon was behind the motion of a stone tossed into the air, the orbit of the Moon around the Earth, and the motion of an apple falling to the ground: gravity. Thus, the middle of the 17th century marks the beginning of the history of gravitation – the force which reaches into the furthest corners of the universe and keeps the world together. Put more precisely: "Two point masses attract each other with a force which points along the line intersecting them, is directly proportional to the product of their masses and indirectly proportional to the square of the distance between them. It explains why the Earth orbits the Sun and also why mobile phones (the most expensive ones, of course.

Looking for cool places in Louisville? Head indoors — and underground - TBO.com

On a stormy March day, I spent three hours zip lining across canyons high above jagged boulders and streams, surviving the 666-foot-long Zipline to Hell and the hair-raising Bridge to Nowhere. After two hours engaging arm, leg and core muscles traversing those precarious passages, I unwound on a tram tour through dark chambers that include Kentucky’s largest fallout shelter. Features include jump lines, pump tracks, high-speed berms, wood-slat bridges across cargo containers and 6 miles of gently rolling country trails. During an hour-long tram tour, guides share details about the cavern’s history, the 223 solid limestone pillars that stabilize the landscape, how the air stays clear and the underground ponds. The cavern was designated Kentucky’s largest fallout shelter, and a sprawling display of life-sized figures illustrates what life would have been like down here in the event of nuclear war. WHY Louisville, a Bardstown Road legend that opened a NuLu outpost two years ago, boasts arty and sassy city-centric T-shirts screen-printed by local artists, Louisville-accented knickknacks and 3-D printer jewelry.

Vacationers and retirees long ago anointed sun-splashed Phoenix one of the country’s top winter retreats. Fast forward a few decades and the once sleepy desert haven, now the U. S. ’s sixth largest metropolitan area, has become a major sports destination. In the next three years, the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale will host three of the country’s premier sporting events -- Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, the College Football Championship Game in January 2016 and the Final Four in April 2017. The Phoenix area offers visitors unique experiences, from authentic Mexican food to spectacular sunsets to scenic golf adventures. To put together a comprehensive travel guide of the Phoenix area, Sports Illustrated teamed up with students from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, who came up with 49 things to do for Super...
