The hard-throwing All-American, who is the top-rated pitcher in the country, has had her share of ups and downs throughout her illustrious career, but this season will be one that won't be forgotten anytime soon. It began on a sour note when Alvelo's father, Aaron, was removed as coach of the Bulldogs after he was charged with taking fundraising money. It ended with Alvelo herself missing the most important game of the season — the Division III state championship game — because she was suspended for breaking the school's code of conduct. After pitching in the state semifinal game in the morning June 4 in Akron, Alvelo was cited for shoplifting in Lancaster later that night. "With the season having so many ups and downs, the highest of highs and lowest of lows, I know I let my team down by not being there, and I'm not proud of that," Alvelo said. Alvelo will play college softball at the University of Washington, a school she verbally committed to as a freshman. The Huskies coach, Heather Tarr, was not pleased with Alvelo's actions off the field but said she still believes in her prized recruit. Tarr has advised Alvelo, who plays on an elite travel team, not to play softball this summer. Even though the season started off on the wrong foot, Alvelo was able to play through it and ended up having a historic season.
Nobody is in a better position to evaluate Saturday's Kentucky Derby favorites (and stablemates) American Pharoah and Dortmund than jockey Martin Garcia. Garcia has ridden Santa Anita Derby winner Dortmund (the Derby's second choice) to a 6-for-6 career record, including two photo finishes. But he's also the regular rider on favored American Pharoah when trainer Bob Baffert sends out the 2014 2-year-old champion for a timed morning workout. "They're both really fast horses, different kind of horses," Garcia said on the Churchill Downs backstretch this week. He's a really talented horse. Dortmund is not as fast, but he can go as far as you want. Garcia said he's the only person who gets on American Pharoah for workouts, including his impressive five-eighths of a mile in 58. "He did everything so easily, like he was galloping," Garcia said. Garcia said that while both horses like to win — as their combined 10-for-11 record substantiates — Dortmund is "not as push-button" as American Pharoah but loves being in a dogfight. American Pharoah has yet to be tested in his four victories, all with Victor Espinoza aboard. Not surprisingly, Garcia frequently gets asked a loaded question: Which horse has the edge. "They are two fast horses, talented horses. "I'm happy with Dortmund," he said. "I rode American Pharoah first time out and he didn't like the track at Del Mar.
During a press conference about two hours earlier, he announced that MARMET had made nine arrests, adding that he expected more arrests to follow soon. He did not provide names or arrest reports for the people arrested, saying the information is part of an active investigation. All of them were arrested on charges of drug trafficking, and Collins said a person who is charged with trafficking is a supplier. Collins said there have been 27 reported overdoses in the city, and Sheriff Tim Bailey said there have been five in the county as well, including the two fatal overdoses of 19-year-old Bailey Witzel and 31-year-old Christopher Wolford last week. I get a page every time on my phone that we have an overdose, and my phone's been going off consistently every day and into the evenings," Collins said. As police began responding to the overdoses, they posted warnings on Facebook, which Collins said has been effective. "Since this started last Wednesday, the MARMET drug task force, which consists of officers from the Marion Police Department, Marion County Sheriff's Office and Marion County Prosecutor's Office, has been working around the clock to try to target... Blue drop heroin is the street name for the heroin, but law enforcement officials began using the term as well as the spike of overdoses began.
