Ralph Jimenez: Multifaceted Stewart Brand wants to alter our perception of ...
The 200-foot-tall clock, which will be installed inside a hollowed-out chamber in Nevada's Mount Washington, is designed to run for 10,000 years. It will tick once per year. Every 1,000 years, a cuckoo will pop out and call. Only in California, I thought....

Waukesha clock restorer crazy about cuckoos
Waukesha — Bill Galinsky has likely heard the call of the American cowbird more times than an ornithologist. The European cuckoo, too — Galinsky hears that bird all day, every day. Whether it's the 20 cuckoo clocks in his home or the hundreds he has ...

Rising Franc Upends Daily Life in Swiss Borderlands
CAMPIONE D'ITALIA, Italy—Switzerland's decision last month to lift the cap on the franc sent the currency flying 40% against the euro and roiled financial markets world-wide. But for Enrico Lironi, the decision hit painfully close to home. The teacher ...

Hey Joe: Mailbag goes cuckoo for Tum Tum
Izzo wants Denzel Valentine to get as many shots as possible each night, but not long fadeaways early in the shot clock like he took on one possession in the first half at U-M. Izzo was upset I wouldn't call it a great chance, but there's a chance ...

Risk and the finance sector
True that this will affect the export of chocolate and cuckoo clocks but it will also bring in even more revenues for most Swiss products as they face relatively inelastic demands. If only the Federal Reserve, IMF and ECB were run so competently ...

Why 1995 is the Year that Created the Future
How did Timothy McVeigh, O.J. Simpson, Monica Lewinsky, and the Netscape IPO all shape the word we live in today? American University professor of journalism W. Joseph Campbell sat down with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie to discuss the misunderstood, ...

There's a cuckoo clock going off inside you, a mad desire to get outside and get things done but we only need to look outside, see the rain, the driving winds and the claggy soil to realise we may have to wait that little bit longer. For us we started chronicling the lower garden back in 2010, long before we started to write about it, we never set out to have a blog, Facebook Page or social media but like the photographs we are better for it. A couple of months before this... We'd seen the garden in its jungle form, there where two large trees right at the bottom of the garden and there was barely a path between the laurel hedges and underfoot it felt like a living sponge snagging you with brambles. Here it is in early spring 2010 and Andrew is attempting to kill off the grass and thatch by putting black plastic over it. It seemed a good idea, it had worked on the allotment but the allotments we'd worked hadn't been left for thirty years to... We removed that much wood that we had a wood chip pile and three large stacks of wood. We had to build bonfires for the dreaded thatch, brambles and branches and stockpiled ash and laurel wood for seasoning (that's what those tarpaulins are covering to the right of the photo).
The City moved ahead with their (lame, lame, lame and indefensible) choice of the Chamber of Horrors to continue their (lame, lame, lame and non-existent and ineffective and indefensible) "marketing" of Port Angeles. They did this even though it was a truly lame and indefensible thing to do. And they did it despite knowing that Dale Wilson was likely to challenge them on it. Now, Dale has stated he'll withdraw his request for an injunction if the City... I like it because it puts the City Council on the spot, as well as the Chamber. Given all the money they've been given, what does the Chamber of Snorers have to show for it. I LOVE the idea of the Chamber having to justify themselves publically, and I LOVE the idea of the Council having to explain their reasons for supporting... Of course, it's not hard to imagine that the City would like to avoid this spectacle, this embarrassment. So they would, naturally enough, want to have some sort of reason to say no to this reasonable and quick-resolution offer. They've This guy sounds like he's been cribbing notes from Scott Nagel, then twisting them all up. He has funding - really. - that he can get this $200 million dollar (his figure) tram built. He was a drone-like bureaucrat in his work, and he's a drone-like bureaucrat as mayor.
And those are among so many other things that wound up making Prague not only my last weekend adventure in Europe (tear), but my favorite city I have visited thus far. Prague was my last weekend trip of the semester, but actually the first one I booked. Before I even left for Rome I took advantage of a discounted trip through student tour company Bus2Alps and decided on Prague. Natalie was on board, too, so we’ve been looking forward to this trip since the middle of August. That being said, I would never ever recommend these Bus2Alps trips to anyone, simply because a 16 hour bus ride (both ways) has no redeeming qualities. We pulled into the city around 9am on Friday morning, which was actually a bit earlier than we had anticipated so at least we had that going for us. First thing on the day’s agenda was a tour that was organized for us. We were all taken around the... But he did explain to us the main sites of the Old Town Square, which looks like something straight out of a painting. The clock tower in the square has a “show” every hour which is something like a cuckoo clock with some moving statues of the 12 apostles and a half-heartedly crowing rooster. Don’t get me wrong, the tower is beautiful and the actual science behind all of the clock pieces is incredible considering when it was built, but the “show” is sooooo lame.
