Now, she is considering moving away from her family home, because the council are planning on knocking down the substation and replacing it with a bigger one to power a new block of flats. Ms Kiernan, who claims she now needs a wheelchair to get around, is lobbying Crawley Borough Council to block the new substation. Ms Kiernan, whose family have lived in the house for three generations, says she is concerned about the impact the substation could have - and possibly has had - on her health. Electricity substations, like overhead power lines and electrical appliances in the home, are sources of extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields. The electric and magnetic fields in the vicinity of electricity substations are well below the levels associated with established health effects. A large number of studies have so far failed to establish adverse health effects associated with exposure to low level electromagnetic fields – with the exception of a possible doubling of the risk of childhood leukaemia.
The research, based on sequencing DNA, could help reduce the need for frequent mammograms – thus changing the way the NHS delivers breast cancer screening. Instead of the whole female population having a mammogram every three years, women would be given an indication of their individual risk level based on their DNA and an initial mammogram. A personalised monitoring plan could then be implemented depending on the woman's risk level - meaning those less at risk would need fewer check-ups. It aims to sequence 94 gene fragmentation discrepancies called Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPS) to identify those that contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer. 'Women will be able to know their individual level of risk and their care can be adjusted to reflect this, with those at highest risk offered more regular screening or even risk-reducing drugs or surgery. 'Those at a lower than average risk, meanwhile, could attend fewer mammograms or start screening later and live safe in the knowledge that they are unlikely to develop breast cancer.
