Those museum entries establish the object type, but they do not identify the eBay item or prove its age. Treat that offer as seller-attributed until object-specific evidence is available.

A decorative style can suggest what to investigate, but it cannot settle when a clock was made. Banco de Espana catalogs a French wall clock that imitates Louis XIV design and explains that nineteenth-century revivalism reused earlier forms. The Met likewise notes that dating some documented cartel-clock models is difficult even when specialists can examine the object.

A BADA listing for a different French clock records a signed dial, named maker, case description, dimensions, and condition. That level of object-specific evidence is the useful comparison. For the eBay offer, a convincing period attribution would need readable marks, movement and case photographs, construction details, and provenance or specialist documentation tied to that clock.

Ask the seller for information that can be checked against the photographs and retained with the purchase record:

• Identity: close views of every signature, stamp, serial number, label, and inscription on the dial, movement, backplate, and case.
• Size: overall height, width, depth, and weight, measured without relying on the word large.

Request a short video showing the hands advancing and any strike sequence, while recognizing that a video demonstrates operation at that moment rather than long-term accuracy or condition.

Do not choose wall hardware from the listing title alone. A documented Paris Musees cartel has published dimensions and weight, while The Met's Jean Godde cartel is much larger and uses gilded bronze components over a mixed wooden structure. These are reference objects, not dimensions for the clock on sale, but they show why exact weight, depth, center of gravity, and rear mounting points matter.

Before payment, ask who will remove and secure the pendulum and other loose parts, whether the movement will be immobilized, how the case will be supported inside the crate, and what the carrier's damage procedure requires. Installation should be based on the measured clock and the wall construction after delivery, not on hardware selected for a generic decorative clock.
