What few people know today is that only a few rows away at the same show, two women from Southern California were busy launching an innovative machine of their own. Lore Harp and Carole Ely of Westlake Village brought along the Vector 1, a PC designed by Lore's husband, Bob Harp. The computer derived its title from the name of their young company, Vector Graphic, Inc. At a time when Vector and Apple were both tiny firms looking to gain a footing in an entirely new market, it was not instantly obvious which company would become more successful—for example, Byte magazine's report on the conference mentioned... For its part, Vector Graphic went on to become one of the best known PC makers of the late 1970s. Like Apple, it was one of the first computer companies to go public, and like Apple, it set its products apart from the crowd with its attention to... It faded from our collective memory because it did not survive the massive industry upheaval brought about by the release of the IBM PC in late 1981. Very few PC makers did. Many know the story of how Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak launched Apple with a foothold in the Jobs family garage in suburban Los Altos, California.
Following the Second World War, when Hungary became part of the Eastern Bloc, the stock exchange was replaced by the most important institution of the Soviet state: its television. Hungarian state television was chased out of Liberty Square by the Revolution of 1989. There were plans to create a five-star hotel in the magnificent neoclassical building, but the limping economy of the nineties and aughts rendered that... One of the oldest is a monument to the fallen heroes of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Many of them were interned and some were executed in the prison that stood here. From what or from whom did Hungary desire or acquire the freedom the square celebrates. All post-Soviet states have had to invent their historical narratives anew in the last quarter century, but Hungary has faced a more vexing problem than most. A country like Poland or Estonia can claim to have been occupied, by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in turn, before winning back its freedom. Hungary, on the other hand, was Nazi Germany’s willing ally in peace and in war, and this makes the story of the Second World War and its aftermath harder to tell.
By Jack Sullivan The first 60 years of Peter Beston’s life revolved largely around desks. He learned to doodle at one before he could write, and he spent 44 years editing film at desks all over the world. Brushes and paints are neatly organized on a metal cart, and two small canvases sit on easels with base coats of paint. “I still have two more paintings left to do for the opening, so I’ve been working like a dog,” the British-born Mr. Beston said last Wednesday, with a laugh, of his solo show opening Friday at the Remsenburg Academy, as part of the Art Remsenburg... Every day for the next six months, he worked in his studio to create 12 new paintings—most of which depict birds and landscapes—for his 18-painting exhibition, with just a pair left to go. In the process, he fell into a daily routine. I have a mid-day meal and maybe a rest, and then I can work from about two or three until nine o’clock at night, really. Beston designed his show, titled “Daylight and Darkness,” as journey from light to dark and back to light again, he said. This is the first time he has attempted to paint dark night scenes, he said.
