Clear on the other side of Belwyn, the lobby of the Prescott Hotel dripped with gold and crystal, an ostentatious display of wealth catering to rich plebeians rather than patricians. Though Jules found the spectacle tasteless, he and Maddox were unlikely to encounter any of their peers in this particular establishment. He retrieved the room key from the front desk, giving the false name Maddox had texted him in advance. Their suite itself was no better than the lobby, overrun with garish decoration, the heavy dark furniture swathed in more silk and velvet than anyone could possibly need outside a bordello. Jules didn’t hesitate to pour himself a glass, despite the pills he’d taken that morning to smooth things out. Jules rolled his eyes, unable to muster a stronger emotional response from beneath the haze of narcotics. A few minutes later, Jules knelt naked on the fluffy faux-fur rug in the suite’s living room, the plug a cool, heavy weight in his ass. He rested his hands on his thighs and watched the clock, anxious for Maddox to come and take him out of his head, make him stop thinking altogether in a way that drugs never could. Maddox entered the suite at precisely the time he’d said he would, dressed for work and carrying a briefcase that he set on the sideboard. He raked his eyes over Jules’ body.
Just over a week ago, I received news of the very best kind. It left me feeling exactly how the residents of Troy must’ve felt upon learning they were to be bestowed their famous Trojan Horse – except, for the purpose of this analogy, you’ll have to imagine that the horse delivered to them had been made... Opportunities of this kind don’t come along very often, and there was no way I was letting this one pass me by. It said the deal closed in sixteen days so I RSPV’d instantly, thanking them and reserving my voucher. It transpired the dining experience was to be held at The Grill – part of a hotel called Flemings Mayfair. Dining in Mayfair is the ‘foodie’ equivalent of playing football at Wembley (or if you prefer racquet sports, tennis at Wimbledon) – it’s the real deal. To top all that, the offer included a glass of champagne , which is a sparking wine grown in the Champagne region of France – take it from me, it’s the height of luxury and tastes lovely. The Amazon terms and conditions stated that the offer was only valid from five thirty pm to ten pm on weekday evenings. I’d been studying the menu online all week since I’d booked the voucher and was raring to go. I got to the hotel entrance at five-thirty pm on the dot.
A Patek Philippe Reference 658 black dial pocket watch (pictured above) was the top lot at Sotheby’s New York Important Watches auction, selling for $527,000, well above its high estimate. Made in 1937, it features a yellow gold open-faced perpetual calendar split-seconds chronograph minute repeater with moon phases and a black dial. * A Vacheron Constantin yellow gold, enamel, and pearl-set open-faced watch sold for $233,000.
