Greensboro has been flaunting signs of Spring for weeks … crocus and daffodils are in bloom, and the flowering trees are bursting with beautiful pink and white blossoms. I decorated my home with Spring vignettes to chase away the winter blues. Nothing says Spring like nests, flowerpots, flowers and mossy balls. I’ve put a weathered watering can, pot of faux purple hyacinths and a fat pottery bird in front of my chippy old window on the mantle in our family room. On the other side of the mantle is a nest, a silver perched bird, and an arched window with a glass knob. It reminds me of my parent’s home, where I grew up. Their house had glass doorknobs throughout the interior of the house. Another case of hindsight being 20/20. Opposite the mantle is our couch and coffee table. On one end of the table is a vignette made up of a tall turquoise urn topped off with a moss-lined nest. This sits on an off white charger with another nest and two little ceramic birds. In our sunroom is a drop-leaf table that belonged to my Grandmother. This Spring, I have a wire birdcage cloche with a pot of faux spring flowers and a clay toad in it. Next to the yellow orchid is another bird nest (because you can NEVER have too many).
My name is Debbie and I live
When we last left off, I was out in the car trying to charge our cell phones. See all those white "bumps" on the ice. Well, those are the ice chunks that the wind was hurtling off the trees and slamming down on the icy earth. And the trees groaned. Can you see the ice that fell off of the tree trunk on the left side of the pic. All the trees and buildings were covered with ice on the southwest side as that was the direction from which the winds blew the storm onto our farm. And the poor bird house on the lower right was drenched in icicles. We spent Saturday helplessly keeping an eye on the trees around our buildings, praying none of the limbs or trees themselves would crash onto them. It was cold, cold, cold outside and without electricity to run our heating system, we were losing heat in the house fast. Excuse the truly messy living room, but we had to push my antique sideboard to the right away from the heat of our wall propane heater. And the leather love seat had to be moved over as well because the heater was throwing off a tremendous amount of heat and making the couch hot. When we first bought the farmhouse, I was not thrilled with the ugly appliance installed right on the living room wall. My friends all know how much I love to decorate our home and that atrocity just wasn't going to work in my decorating scheme.
I had a look around my scrap table to see what was sitting there then I took that “don’t over think it” approach with some Glimmer Mists. I am a notorious, self confessed, need-to-just-step-away-and-leave-it-alone scrapper so this was a challenge for me. I DID change my mind on the photo, so bearing in mind it took about 15 minutes to upload my second choice of photo, edit it and... That’s like a land speed record for me. I admit that most of my pages sit on my scrap desk for days (even weeks) before I finally settle on the design and glue them down. First up I found a piece of 12x12 white American Crafts cardstock, a good old letter stencil and some white gesso. I then turned the stencil over and sort of stamped the excess randomly across the page on the left of the page (towards the top left of where my photo would sit). You don't need THIS stencil. I just added a couple of strips of that under the stenciled numbers and again top left of the photo. I also found that netting stuff sitting in a scrap pile. scrap papers, ribbon, fibres, fabric or gauze would work equally as well. Start off with the lightest colours then work towards the darker. Be conservative with the darker colours so they don’t overwhelm the page. then for that darker colour I got closer to the page. When the spray pools you can move your page to manipulate how it drizzles down the page.
