The coach journey took around four hours and dropped me on the outskirts of the old town. My hostel was then about a 15minute walk on the heart of the old town. I found the street, but didn't know what number it was so I had to try and find some wifi, so I could find out the number. This wasn't too hard because wifi was all around me. I got to my hostel around 11. I quickly checked in and decided to grab a beer to chill me out. I was way too tired for any of this so I said that I was staying in that night because I wanted to be fresh for tomorrow. The following morning I got up nice and early to go on a free walking tour which started at 12 just outside the town hall. A few other people from my hostel were doing it, so we all went down together. They were telling me about French guy at our hostel. The tour started shortly after midday just incase some people were late. Warning : One (especially a family member) may finish reading this post with extreme disapproval, but please remember that I have a good head on my shoulders and I am very confident in my world-skills (as much as a twenty-year old can get away... Also, I was once told that having a blog seems almost pretentious as if I have any idea of what I am talking about and think my words are worth anyone’s time of day. I decided to go to Belgium exactly two days before I went. I would be traveling alone, in an unknown country, yes. But traveling alone ensues endless opportunities minus any conflicting opinions, and once you learn to enjoy your own company, traveling alone can be one of the best, spontaneous, bodacious experiences you will carry with you and will contribute... I would take a train from Nijmegen to Utrecht to Rotterdam to Brussels, because of course the faster train was not in service.
For many years, I thought that Carter Mansion was a place that should have had more public attention. The rangers gave me permission to open the house for weekly tours since I’ve been retired and even though it’s open on Tuesdays, it’s been amazing how many people have come through. The John and Landon Carter Mansion was the single most imposing structure in the frontier during the Revolutionary War period in what was then North Carolina. Construction of the house was started by John Carter sometime between 1775 and finished in 1781 and certainly reflects his position in the community at the time. His son, Landon, lived with his parents during that time, and after his father died of smallpox on the road to New Bern with a box of Tory deeds, Landon inherited it, raising his six children with his wife, Elizabeth MacLin, until his untimely... During his most important years, John Carter was the chairman of the Watauga Association, justice of the peace, a land surveyor, Colonel and head of the Home militia, involved with the largest land purchase this country has ever seen, the...
